The Marvel Cinematic Universe is on a roll and seems to show no signs of stopping.
With the worldwide blockbuster Avengers: Endgame, which surpassed Avatar’s worldwide box office collections last Saturday, the MCU has become a household name, its fan-base ranging from pre-teens to adults alike. Avengers: Endgame (2019) bid farewell to MCU’s biggest stars Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, leaving fans all across the world heartbroken.
However, there’s still a ray of hope. Rather, an entire beam of it. With the ushering in of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as seen at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, a whole slew of movies are ready to fill the void the original Avengers left, the most significant being the next Thor movie. Not much was revealed about the movie, but here’s what we know- Thor 4: Love and Thunder directed by Taika Waititi, releases on November 5, 2021. Yes, it’s a two-year-long wait and that’s exactly something we can’t do.
And here’s the real kicker. Familiar faces are back, Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson among them. But the most surprising? Natalie Portman a.k.a. Jane Foster.
Except, she’s not back as Jane Foster. At least, not just. It was revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con 2019 that Natalie Portman shall be returning but as the Goddess of Thunder. This has happened canonically twice in the comics, in both 1978 and 2014. She was deemed worthy of wielding Mjolnir, after Thor Odinson was unable to do so, following the events of the Original Sin(comics).
There is also speculation that the new Thor shall be queer, playing love-interest to Tessa Thompson a.k.a Valkyrie (Brunnhilde), who, following Thor: Ragnarok was established as Marvel’s first openly queer character.
With so many new revelations and announcements, we can hardly wait for Thor 4: Love and Thunder. What about you?
