Momos is a street food that melts your heart. If I’ll ask you to name the top 5 street food snacks, what will top your list? The unanimous answer to this question will be “momos”. Momos have become India’s most favourite street food. It is ruling the street, the café, and the restaurants. Every city in India has its famous momo shops. Eating the hot steamed momos in a hilly station is what many people wish for. But now we are locked down and it is also not safe to eat street food. But we can always have a choice to cook it at home. How do we do that? Just follow the easy steps and get started.
1. All-purpose flour
3. Carrots, grated
4. Cabbage, grated
6. Onion, finely chopped
7. Soy sauce
8. Chillies, chopped
• Take all-purpose flour, oil and salt in a bowl and mix it well. Add water in part and knead the batter to form the dough. Cover it with a moist cloth and leave it for 15-20 minutes.
• Meanwhile, heat oil in a pan. Add garlic and sauté it for 2-3 seconds. Add chopped chillies (optional) and onions and then saute it for a minute.
• Add the other finely chopped vegetables and still them well on a medium to high flame for 5-6 minutes. Add soy sauce, salt, and pepper.
• Do not add salt at that time. To make your veggies crunchy, add salt later.
Shaping The Momo
Step-1: Divide the dough into small balls. Then roll each dough ball into thin circles of about 2-3 inch diameter. Let the edges are thin and the centre thick.
Step-2: Place a spoon or 2 full of vegetable mixture in the centre. Then, by lifting one side of the edge, start pleating.
Step-3: Once you are half done, stick to the other edge with the help of water. If you want them in round shape, fold through all the ends and make them meet in the centre.
Step-4: Do the same with all dough balls. Then keep them under the moist cloth until you are ready to steam them.
How To Steam
Step-1: Take a steamer or an idli maker and boil some water. Till then, grease the steamer pan and keep the momos in it. Be careful and do not let them touch. Maintain space between two momos.
Step-2: Steam them for about 10 minutes. Once they will be done, the momos will give a transparent look.
Step-3: Your momos are ready to be served for. Serve your veg momos with a spicy sauce or chilli sauce.
See! It was not that difficult after all. The king of street snacks right at your home to soothe your taste buds can be prepared in almost 40-50 minutes. So what we cannot eat out, let’s not miss the rich delicacy. Once you will cook it 2-3 times, it will become easier for the next time. Make it spicier if you like spicy food. Serve it with chutney or sauces to add flavours.
