This School Has Produced Multiple CEOs And Stars

It’s usually Universities/Colleges who brag about their famous alumni. But, this school in Hyderabad with its list of graduates could put the best of colleges to shame.

The school which has produced multiple CEO’s

India has been making a name for itself in producing top CEO’s. But to have four of them from the same school in Hyderabad is remarkable. Hyderabad Public School, situated in Begumpet, has produced the CEOs of Microsoft, Adobe, Mastercard, and even homegrown Wipro.

Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, Adobe Systems CEO Shantanu Narayen, Mastercard’s CEO Ajay Banga, Wipro’s ex-CEO T.K.Kurien, all have done their schooling from HPS.In an interview with Stephen Dubner for the Freakonomics Radio series “The Secret Life of a CEO”, even Nadella revealed that all four of the CEOs attended Hyderabad Public School (HPS), a private school founded in 1923.

Mere Coincidence?

It isn’t a mere coincidence that HPS boasts such a formidable list of alumni. Modelled after Eton College, meant to be a means for the children of the aristocrats to attain a world-class education, the school has come a long way since then. Today, the school enrols 3,200 students every year.

Tracing its alumni database, one can find that the list is not constrained to only four of them. In over nearly a century, HPS has produced chief ministers, entrepreneurs, and several globally celebrated corporate executives including Fairfax Financial’s CEO Prem Watsa(known as Canadian Warren Buffet), Apollo Hospitals CEO K Hari Prasad and Cobra Beer’s CEO Karan Bilimoria.

Other than CEOs

It’s no surprise that the school has nurtured famous alumni in several diverse fields, not just business. Cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle studied here, as did MTV VJ Nikhil Chinappa. The school has also provided some cinema stars — it is the alma mater of Telugu actor Nagarjuna, Rana Daggubati & Vivek Oberoi. And given its heritage, it’s also a favourite of the political class –AP’s chief minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, former CM Kiran Kumar Reddy, Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, and Parliamentarians Ajay Kumar, Pallam Raju, Bapi Raju Kanumuri all studied here. And to add a dash of glamour, former Miss India Diana Hayden is also an alumna. The school ranks as one of the top 10 schools in India.

“Attending HPS was the best break I had in my life,” Nadella said when he visited the school in 2017.

Nadella agrees HPS was formative. Also, students can pursue a variety of interests outside of the classroom.

“I think it [HPS] was formative in very different ways,” says Nadella. “Shantanu was a debater while I was a cricketer, and we all learned different things there. I think over anything else, it gave us the liberty to think, learn, and pursue bold dreams.”

He once said that his experience playing cricket there strongly influenced his professional career. In an interview at Wharton Business School, he quoted that he learned from his high-school cricket coach the way to walk the road “between having confidence in your capability yet having the power to learn”. He also met his wife, Anupama Nadella, at HPS.

HPS produces generals and not foot-soldiers,” says the principal. The school’s core values, as on its website, include “strong self-esteem” and “tolerance and respect for others.” “We train students to create a difference in whatever they do and leave their footprints on the sands of time”, says the school’s website.

It’s fairly incredible to have a bunch of personalities come from the same school. HPS’s most striking achievement is producing 4 simultaneous CEO of top MNC’s.

If you’re looking to raise one of the most powerful business leaders in the world, HPS is the right place.
