How it all started
On 17th December 2016 Elon Musk, Founder of The Boring Company tweeted “Traffic is driving me nuts. Am going to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging…” and added, “I am actually going to do this”. There it began! ‘The Boring Company’
To solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic, roads must go 3D, which means either flying cars or tunnels. Unlike flying cars, tunnels are weatherproof, out of sight and won’t fall on your head. A large network of tunnels many levels deep would fix congestion in any city, no matter how large it grew (just keep adding levels). The key to making this work is increasing tunneling speed and dropping costs by a factor of 10 or more – this is the goal of The Boring Company. Fast to dig, low-cost tunnels would also make Hyperloop adoption viable and enable rapid transit across densely populated regions, enabling travel from New York to Washington DC in less than 30 minutes.
The First Tunnel will soon be open!
On 22nd October 2018, Elon Musk tweeted that the First Tunnel that will run under Hawthorne in the Los Angeles area will be launched on 10th December this year, what is more, exciting news for you is that it will be open for public transit on the next day. The good news is not over yet, it will be free to the public. Yes, you read it right ‘Free Rides’ for the public however it is not confirmed for how long but you can’t saying because it’s Elon Musk, you never know what he is up to.
About The Tunnel
The tunnel is located in Hawthorne, California, which also happens to be the home Elon Musk’s SpaceX. The tunnel stretches over 2 miles.
According to the Boring Company, the tunnel travels a short distance north from below SpaceX’s headquarters before turning and traveling west for several miles.
What it Really means for the company.
Elon Musk previously said that “started out as a joke” and He himself admitted that the project might fail. On the contrary, he was a bit serious about this project which was shown by him being tight-lipped about the project’s progress. He also used several publicity stunts including selling $500 Flamethrower which made by The Boring Company itself to fund testing and development of the project.
The Company also plans to have its system run high-speed between the cities. This will pave way for Hyperloop project to run with ease. Elon Musk stated about this in May, that it would make the cost of traveling as little as $1.
